My 9 favorite non-fiction books so far in 2020

Hey there! Welcome back. ^^ Hope you liked past week’s list! As I told you then, I’ve read a lot this year, not only fiction, but also about history, mythology, even memories and death. These books taught me well when I read them, and I keep returning to some of them for references and take notes, taking my Craft to the next level. I’ve improved a lot thanks to them, so here we are, the nine books I’ve liked the most so far this year. As before, they are in alphabetical order, with the synopsis, links to my reviews and to buy them on Amazon. Happy witching!

1. A History of Magic and Witchcraft

Broomsticks and cauldrons, familiars and spells: magic and witchcraft conjures a vivid picture in our modern-day imagination. While much of our understanding is rooted in superstition and myth, the history of magic and witchcraft offers a window into the past. It illuminates the lives of ordinary people in the past and shines a light on the fascinating pop culture of the premodern world.
Blowing away folkloric cobwebs, this enlightening new history dispels many of the misconceptions surrounding witchcraft and magic that we still hold today. From Ancient Greece and Rome through to the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era, historian Frances Timbers shines a light on the impact of Christianity and popular culture in the construction of the figure of the ‘witch’. The development of demonology and ceremonial magic is brought together with the West’s troubled past with magic and witchcraft to chart the birth of modern Wiccan and Neopagan movements in England and North America.
Witchcraft is a metaphor for oppression in an age in which persecution is an everyday occurrence somewhere in the world. Fanaticism, intolerance, prejudice, authoritarianism, and religious and political ideologies are never attractive. Beware the witch hunter!

2. A New Dictionary of Fairies

Fairies are a challenging subject, intertwining culture, folklore, and anecdotal accounts across centuries and millennia. Focusing primarily on the Celtic speaking cultures, with some material from adjacent cultures including Anglo-Saxon and Norse, A New Dictionary of Fairies has in-depth entries on a variety of fairies as well as subjects related to them, such as why we picture elves with pointed ears or where the idea of fairies being invisible comes from. It also tackles more complicated topics like the nature and physicality of the fairy people. Anyone with an interest in the Good Neighbours will find this book a solid resource to draw from.

3. Aradia

A Revelatory New Approach to the Influential Witchcraft Classic
First published in 1899, Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches is Charles Godfrey Leland's fascinating record of folk magic, said to have been revealed to him by hereditary witches of Italy's Romagna and Tuscany regions. Celebrating the goddess Diana and her daughter Aradia, this seminal work presents a rich and complete methodology of practice for those who are willing to engage its unique wisdom.
Aradia presents Leland's original English manuscript with new interpretations and translations, including forty lines never before rendered in English. Craig Spencer provides in-depth commentary that reveals the rich historical context of this profound work and provides revelatory analysis that makes the true heart of the original come alive. You will also discover hands-on instructions for a unique magical practice based on Leland's remarkable glimpse into nineteenth-century craft lore. This magical guide is designed to help you expand and enhance your own modern-day journey through the enchanted realms of witchcraft.

4. Every Grain of Sand

Sexual healer and entrepreneur David P. Wichman has lived through it all: childhood abuse, foster care, homelessness, survival sex work, and the blackest pits of drug and alcohol addiction. Despite the darkness, he found a profound sense of purpose as a male escort, but not the type of provider often seen in the news. His approach to sex work transcended common shame-based belief systems as he brought compassionate intimacy to marginalized men, including the elderly, disabled, and traumatized, illustrating a universal need for true connection. After white-collar crime landed him in jail, David resolved to finally conquer the sense of brokenness that had been driving him to self-destruction throughout his life. In his moving memoir, he recounts how his recovery and spiritual journey have revealed to him his inherent wholeness and worth, a message of love and belonging that he now carries to others. Every Grain of Sand is a celebration of restoration to a life of joy, gratitude, and wonder.

With spread ideas, sample readings, and detailed advice, this book shows how to develop your own path of wisdom with a simple deck of cards.

7. Pagan Portals - Raven Goddess

Pagan Portals - Raven Goddess follows on from the author's earlier book, The Morrigan, to help the reader continue to get to know the Irish Goddess of war, battle, and prophecy with a particular focus on disentangling truth from common misconceptions.
