Hi, pornies! How was your weekend? This seems like will be a good week. I wanted to talk you about an experince I had a few months ago, when I woke up in the middle of the night after dreaming with a certain folk saint. La Santa Muerte. I read about Her now and then before the dream, so I knew a bit of what She represents and stands for, but there wasn't a real interestbeyond mere curiosity. Things changed a bit after that.
For those unfamiliar with her, Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte (Spanish for Our Lady of the Holy Death), is a Mexican, folk saint that has been surrounded in controversy since the beginning. She is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by Her devotees, and doesn't judge who comes to Her to ask something. This has its pros and cons, as in everything.
On the pro side, She accepts social minorities, such as the LGBT+ community, sex workers, and all kind of social outcasts, because Death doesn't judge. On the con side, she's also popular among thieves, drug dealers, and all kinds of criminals who ask for Her favor when doing their business. This obviously doesn't help, but again, Death doesn't judge.
This seems to be a core concept in her following. As long as you are clear in keep your words when praying to Santísima, follow Her practices with respect and seriousness, She will give you what you ask for, whether it's good or bad. There are Catholic elements in the cult, but in general this seems to be the most common thing one hears and read when geting to know this figure.
Now, that night I spoke about, I dreamed I was in a dark room, sitting on a large table with a man on hte other side, right in front of me. I remember he was trying to manipulate me and make me do things I didn't want to, but nothing sexual. At some point, we strated fighting, he almost had me there, but then I overpowered them all of a sudden, and said something in the lines of "Don't you know I have La Niña Blanca (The White Girl) by my side? That La Santa Muerte walks with me? I'm not alone". He fought a bit more, but then I woke up.
When I talked about it on Twitter, someone told me there's a secret Facebook Group where I could learn more about Her. I made my account (which lately has gotten tons of friend requests from total strangers! It gives me the creeps, really, sorry for that), and was accepted. I'm working with some issues, because I have to, and I have a bit of a hard time including Catholic beliefs in my practice. I need to put a clear division and I'm still unsure about how to do this, but I'm improving!
What have I learned reading and exploring the world of La Santa Muerte? First of all, it is the biggest memento mori reminder, and that She doesn't judge (although I look at Death as genderless; I only use femenine pronouns with Santísima). Death is not dangeroes, Death is whatever you believe it is and whatever you want it to be. This reminds me a lot about the Death tarot card, which speaks about changes and evolution. Somethig old needs to die in order for something new to be born.
One of the few things that surprised me is that I was told She often approaches people by dreams and nagging thoughts, and I certainly couldn't stop thinking about Santísima after that dream. I kept looking for meaning but wasn't sure whether She was calling me in any sense. I'm still not sure if this is a path I want to explore further, the differences are way too many to feel comfortable, but... Who said dying is?
Have you had an experience with La Santa Muerte? Let me know in the comments. ^^ Same if you know about any free resource (Youtube channel, blog, course... whatever, actually) about Her that is trust-worthy.
