Book review: Good as Hell

Hi there, pornies, I hope you are okay. I'm still getting better and recovering from (what I think was) an almost burn-out. I'm taking it easier with the reviews and reading in general,  but I'm still on it. ^^ Today I want to tell you about a curious book that gave me a good time: Good as Hell, by Clancy Nacht & Thursday Euclid. Thank you so much to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a copy!

It's a mysteriously charmed life for orphan Sebastien Harris, but it's still a shock to be offered a full ride to attend grad school at the obscure but prestigious Bosch University in upstate New York. Trouble starts as he attempts to reach the campus for his interview: first the train is cancelled, then a swarm of migratory air mattresses block the streets.
When he finally arrives, he's too exhausted to question why a remarkably handsome man named Gem is waiting for him, nor does he have time. A demon horde demolishes the university, and the pair run for their lives—at which point Sebastien realizes Gem is not, strictly speaking, human. Their adventure exposes Sebastien's heritage...and reveals the prophecy he is destined to fulfill. Gem is infernal, a human-demon hybrid, and meant to be Sebastien's servitor, a magical well from which Sebastien, a warlock by birth, will draw the power to remake the world. If he survives.

This is a different kind of fantasy, to begin with. There's the chosen one prophecy and the end-of-the-world threat, but it is all wrapped with a bit of absurdist and light humor. Nothing is as serious as you may imagine, and I have to say the cover makes a good deal of justice to the actual story. Seriously, this made me smile several times and forget about real life as well.

I liked the writing style most of the time. Clancy Nacht and Thursday Euclid have a good way to tell stories and keep you entertained, and their descriptions are also okay. I liked how colorful, funny and irreverent it was in this world, how the characters developed as the plot progressed and found their place in a magical society so far from perfect.

However, there were some elements that didn't make much sense, to be honest. I admit this is not my kind of reading and so I may be a bit biased in this regard, but there were things that seemed added just for the sake of being added, just to make the book different, which is fine, but I would have liked a bit more of development on other parts of the novel and a bit of background on the characters. It was all focused on the present that I felt I missed something.

In general lines, I liked reading Good as Hell. It's a funny book that gave me a good time and its characters (almost all of them are bisexual, by the way!) along with a good dose of kink and explicit. It was good to discover this world, go with the flow and smile with this witty and friendly cast. Also, it has a very good ending! I liked that plot twist in the final scenes.
