Book review: Badass Ancestors

Good moning, pornies. Sorry for disappearing all of a sudden, but I wasn't feeling very good. I took some rest these past days and seems like it was exactly what I needed. I suspect this is accumulated stress, so I'll take it easier for a while. Today there's a book I want to tell you about, a great reading fo this time of the year: Badass Ancestors: Finding Your Power with Ancestral Guides, by Patti Wigington. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

Cultivate Relationships with Your People for Empowerment and Healing.
This groundbreaking book shows you how to work with different types of ancestors to find, develop, and celebrate the personal power of your inner badass. By embracing the strength of your lineage—both blood relatives and those chosen by the heart—you can receive wisdom and guidance when you need it the most.
Badass Ancestors provides a compelling series of rituals, meditations, mantras, and exercises that connect you with ancestral guides. You'll discover advice on genealogy research, the history of ancestor veneration in cultures around the world, ways to deal with problematic ancestors, and how to leave your own legacy for future generations. Each chapter offers unique calls to action—including crafts and recipes—that help you build self-confidence and overall badassery with your ancestors' assistance. When you develop relationships with your relatives and with spiritual or archetypal ancestors, you engage the process of healing trauma and achieving a deep sense of emotional and spiritual well-being.

This book covers many aspects of Ancestral work, how to build a relationship with them, how to develop your practice and get to know these people. You even get some recipes! I liked this the most, and that the author focused on genealogical research, giving endless tips and information to make this an easier process for anyone interested in searching for the past.

Although the amount of work is hard and there are many things to be fone, Patti Wigington explains it all clearly, answering many of the possible doubts you may have on the matter. How to classify information, how to keep going forward (er, backwards?) with this, alog with some suggestions on how to do it easier for those who will come after you are gone.

However, it surprised me a lot that she didn't include any advice on how to protect yourself. There an entire chapter about troublesome ancestors and how to heal ancestral trauma, also about putting your altar in good conditions, but nothing about how to keep yourself safe when you get started. Barely a line about how to recognize them as your ancestors, whether by blood or any other relationship. I'm a bit worried about this part.

From divination to veneration and with a good dose of devotional practice, Badass Ancestors is the kind of book you want for the Halloween season. You get to know different kinds of ancestors, how to work with them, and will get you ready for this super special Samhain + Full Moon combo. Just be mindful about your protection, as I said before.
