Book review: The Secrets We Keep

Hi pornies. I hope you are all alright. We’ve had several weeks with no internet at all in my home, which has given me large amounts of time to read. So far, I’m using a WiFi network from across the street a friend shared with us, but… scheduling entries in the phone? Hellish, honestly. That’s the reason why I haven’t been as active as I’d like in social media, but this is out of my hands, so bear with me a little until things get back to normal. So, stopping with the whining and ranting, what about a good book? Today I want to tell you about The Secrets We Keep, by Rick R. Reed.  Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

Jasper Warren is a happy-go-lucky young man in spite of the tragedy that’s marred his life. He’s on a road to nowhere with his roommate, Lacy, whom he adores, and a dead-end retail job in Chicago. And then everything changes in a single night. Though Jasper doesn’t know it, his road is going somewhere after all. This time when tragedy strikes, it brings with it Lacy’s older, wealthy, sexy uncle Rob. Despite the heart-wrenching circumstances, an immediate connection forms between the two men.But the secrets between them test their attraction. Will their revelations destroy the bloom of new love… or encourage it to grow?

The story of Rob and Jasper surprised me in many ways, the kind of romance many of us dream with at some point. It had all the right ingredients for a dramatic, complex romance, and although the age-gap between them didn’t play a major role more than a few mentions before the ending, when it is front and central, you can expect a lot from these guys.

Theirs is a straight-forward relationship. The chemistry is instantaneous, which makes it a bit complicated for Jasper to accept his feelings in the midst of loss and despair, but which takes him in a healing journey towards his own redemption and growth. I really liked how he changed in the novel and the kind of person he became at the end. By the way, very realistic ending! Me likes.

However, I missed much of the character development! I wish I had seen more interaction between Rob and Jasper, discovered more about Rob, his reasons for the decisions he took and what made him be the man he is. As a protagonist, I was expecting more background on him, something so I could connect with him as a reader, but Rick R. Reed focused more on Jasper and the relationship he had with Rob, leaving the past of this man practically a mystery.

All in all, it was entertaining, short and quick to read, although don’t expect too much insight into other characters, just in Jasper. He certainly is a guy you want to meet, be friends with, it’s impossible not to love him with such a golden heart he has! His loyalty is tested many times, at many levels, and he makes several mistakes in the book, but The Secrets We Keep is exactly about that: fixing yourself and your problems, one step at a time.
