Book review: coffee days, whiskey nights

Hello, pornies. How is your week going? Still no changes, and the stress is taking its toll on me. It’s been almost a month with no internet in here, which means a longer, more tedious road to accomplish things. However, reading has helped a lot, and a book of poems did it recently. Painfully honest and emotionally graphic, I fell in love with coffee days, whiskey nights, by Cyrus Parker. Many thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy of this book!

A lot can happen between the first sip of coffee and the last taste of whiskey, and this book takes a look at the way a single day can change our outlook on everything from relationships with others, to our relationships with ourselves, and everything in between. Ultimately, coffee days, whiskey nights illustrates that no matter how hopeless we may feel at the end of the day, a new one is only a few hours away.

The book explores several topics such as body dysphoria, identity, depression and anxiety, along with the never ending tide of self-doubt and sabotage that comes every single night for those of us who deal with some of those problems. I include here because, although I was born a man and have always felt as such, I’ve struggled with several of those problems for different reasons.

Cyrus Park has an honest approach in each poem, letting metaphors and comparisons behind. Here, they rather express each of their feelings and experiences just as they were, with no embellishments but a painful dose of reality. Although they are pretty short, I found myself re reading several of them because how deeply they resonate with me.

This is a book perfect for those who want to understand the depths of mental illnesses, how they affect the human mind, how they shatter sanity to the point of almost no return, and how someone comes back to life like a phoenix. The book alternates black and white pages, as if comparing the light of day with the darkness of night, showing exactly how one may feel depending on the hour. And here I was thinking nobody would take that seriously if I ever said a word about it!

coffee days, whiskey nights is another great book from Cyrus Parker. Although you don’t need to have any experience related to the topics (and please, do not romanticize them, just don’t,) you will empathize with their meanings nonetheless. And if you do, you will feel understood and less lonely, which is the first step towards recovery and a better life. Reading it will remind you that it does get better.
