This is a challenging Pride Month
for all of us, and sometimes it gets the worst out of us. This happened recently
with Ben Masters, who posted a video in which he said
horrible things. Instead of summarizing, listen directly to it. Of course, he quickly realized his mistake, but was expelled from Cocky Boys because of it.
A part of me kind of understands why he
would say this, kind of… He was
speaking based on rage, resentment, hurt, selfishness (truth be told), and who knows what else. It doesn’t make it any less offensive, though, and it would have been better not to say anything in the first place. I fully understand the reactions of many users, and it also shocked me when I heard what he said.
Why am I talking about this now? Because it’s a
lesson for all of us not to do the same thing. This is a though time for all of
us, more to others than some, but I feel we should try to focus on the fact he
learned from the mistake rather than in the mistake itself.
This doesn’t mean we don’t have the right to be
angry and hurt because of it, that we shouldn’t care about the matter, but that we change
the point of view. Again, it should have been better to stay silent and process those feelings in a healthier, more positive, productive way, but damage is done. Hence, we know hurting words won’t change a thing.
I would rather focus on the fact he asked for forgiveness, learned the
lesson, be happy that he did so and hope he will do better in the future. He
was mean, hurting, careless and insensitive, but he realized his mistake quickly.
I care more about the last part, the one which means he knows he was wrong and
feels sorry for doing it. We’ve all done similar things in the past,
in totally different conditions, space and time, but we did, and we all learned
from them.
It is human to make mistakes, but to learn from them is what makes us a better version of ourselves. I’ve seen so much hate towards Ben that I cannot wonder if these people are not doing something similar, although not equal, to what he did. Hate leads us nowhere, and there’s enough of it in the world already, so I’d rather focus on the victories, on humility and forgiveness. We all should.
Stay safe, well and be prudent. K.
