In this tranquil world where all animals live in peace, carnivores and herbivores have an agreement to live amicably. Yagi is a goat who loves reading (and eating!) books; his dream is to become a bookstore clerk, but goats who eat paper aren't exactly welcomed at places that sell books! But maybe he can charm Ookami, the scary wolf store manager into giving him a job...This book contains sexual content and is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age."TOKYOPOP strikes again with another marvelous, one-volume, Boy's Love manga." - Katerina, Goodreads
The story is pretty simple and cute, devoid of any major drama or explosive turning points. What we get, instead, is a wholesome story where both characters are charming in their own way, both determined to prove themselves and be someone different to what social norms tell them they should be. You can even say this is a story about classism and expectations.
The fantasy is very light, with not so much explained, but just enough to make you enter this world not so different to ours. It is not only because Yagi the Bookshop Goat is short that times flies, it is also the style and the development that make you simpatizase with the characters. You can see yourself in them with such easy it's even surprising, not because they're unreal, but because we often forget that inner child, which is exactly the side the readers will see come to life.
This of course creates some problems because there's a bit of sexual content, not enough to make this an erotica manga, but just enough to make it adult. Of course I don't shy away from it, but I feel that it wouldn't have made a big difference if that last scene wasn't included. Also, there were times the characters were too childish while they're supposed to be all adults. I think the idea was great, but it failed a bit in some scenes.
All in all, I loved this manga! Yagi the Bookshop Goat is a story that shows a safe, healthy, natural romance between two characters you can't not love. It is funny, heart-warming, and cute in every sense of the word. If you want something that will become a comfort reading, make you daydream, and smile page after page, this is for you! I couldn't expect anything less than greatness coming from TokyoPop!
