A few days ago I support Mr. Troy Accola in the Gay VMA for Best Butt (GO DO IT, BTCHS) and rewrote a line from Big Girl Now, from NKOTB ft. Lady fucking perfect Gaga. In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, here it is for your delight:
When I got to think about it, I realized this song captures perfectly what it means to be a GBTQ+ guy who gets the fuck out of the closet and breaks free from shame and fear. Even more if you are young!
Now, the song is clearly sexual, but if you think about it, Gaga sings that she’s hunting for her man, unafraid of what will happen what others will say. She feels confident, sexy and free to do with her life as she pleases. She is in full power, and the guys are sweating for her, which is exactly what I felt when I came out to my classmates in Senior Year (except for that last phrase; my mates had bad taste, if I may say).
I have seen a lot of people criticizing the LGBT+ community, the Gay Community mostly, for how hyper-sexual it is, but as far as I can see, we have been shamed, neglected, hated, hurt and denied so many things, like, I don’t know, justice, love, family, acceptance, friends, equality, opportunities, and so on, that when we finally have the courage to come out, we want it all.
We don’t care what others think, what they will say or what we look like in their eyes. We are excited, hyped and confident. We are our true selves, we are free, and we want to dance until we drop dead on the floor. Can you think of anything as sexy, as hot, as a confident man?
I’m sure as hell nobody involved with this song was thinking about the LGBT+ community when working on Big Girl Now, but who cares? Not me, certainly not me. For me, this is a Gay Closet-Shattering Anthem.
