Faeryday: Possible attributes of the Alder King?

Illustration to Goethe's "Erlkönig," by Moritz von Schwind

Hey there you guys! How are you today? I’ve had quite interesting days, to be honest, and one of the reasons why is because I’ve been reading and learning more about the Erlkönig, the Alder King. I'm cheating a little this time, but deal with me for today. ^^' I was curious about what I could connect with Him for, what would be in His areas of action and got some interesting answers when meditating.

I was told He’s not that much a death-related being, but more about transformation and glamour. This makes me think that maybe He’s not about permanent or big changes, but subtle ones, alterations that may not mean to last more than intended. Also, I got the idea that He’s also a healer, a trickster, and doesn’t have much patience. Looking at Goethe’s poem, He certainly conceals Himself from the father, tries to trick the boy and really hates to wait or to be denied what he wants, so the Alder King is not someone to mess up with; not that you can do that with the Gentry, mind you.

What doesn’t make much sense for now is the healer part, since there are no reference about it in the original material. Maybe it would be a new role or a matter of semantics. When I read Morgan Daimler’s Traveling the Fairy Path, though, I saw that Alder has been associated with defensive and offensive magic, divination, victory, protection, and fire. Perhaps He “heals” conflict by ending it and preventing stillness, inaction and uncertainty. Alder does have medicinal uses, many of which are related to the throat, so I would be reading more about it in the future, but in terms of mythology I haven’t seen a connection (yet.)

Being honest, I’m a bit intimidated by this last aspect of the Alder King, and wouldn’t like to deal with side effects right now. My life is hectic enough as it is, thank you very much, so I’d rather focus on divination and poetry, and get to know Him more before asking for defense, protection and offensive. I’m still figuring some things out, especially one in particular. You can never be cautious enough when Otherworldly beings are involved, but I strongly feel that that one in particular may summarize what I’m supposed to learn from the Alder King at this stage of my life. Let’s see what happens.

So, as a final update, right now I’m searching for an English translation of the original, oldest Danish Ballad that inspired Goethe’s poem. Elveskud, which means Elf-Shot. Again, offensive references. According to Wikipedia, “the earliest surviving manuscript is Karen Brahes Folio, a Danish manuscript from the 1570s.” I’ve tried (with no luck) to find an English translation of that manuscript or at least the ballad in question, since the most popular version is from 1695. Although Goethe’s poem is inspired by Johann Gottfried Herder's translation, I always like to have a look at the original material if possible and see what else I can discover.

So, what do you think about this? Maybe it’s a lot of making-up? This is still a work in progress, so any kind of critic or feedback is welcome. ^^ It’s the earliest of stages with a relationship, but I like the direction it’s taking. Kinky regards, K!

Book review: Pagan Portals - Living Fairy

Hi there, pornies! I hope you are all safe and sound. I shouldn't publish this THIS EARLY, but I'm confident you will pre order the book nonetheless (don't you dare do otherwise!) Pagan Portals - Living Fairy: Fairy Witchcraft and Star Worship, by Morgan Daimler, is innovative, creative, and a current work in progress that catches the eye. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy!

  • Series: Fairy Witchcraft #4
  • Print Length: 112 pages
  • Publisher: Moon Books (December 1, 2020)
  • Publication Date: September 28, 2018
  • ISBN-10: 1789045398
  • ISBN-13: 978-1789045390
  • Genres: Fairies, Celtic mythology, Witchcraft, Magic
  • Rating: 5 / 5 stars
The human world and the Otherworld have always been intrinsically connected just as the beings within them are, but these connections have been strained in the Western world over the last millenia. Cultural and religious shifts have pushed the Other to the fringes and centred humanity in the world and in many spiritual frameworks. As we move into the 21st century the Othercrowd is pushing back, seeking a return to their place in things. Many witches are feeling this shift. Living Fairy is a look at ways to deepen your practice of fairy witchcraft by actively calling the Good Neighbours back, and connecting to them more experientially. It emphasizes older ways of relating to them within a modern framework, while acknowledging the good and the bad that comes with this work. There is also an emphasis on moving away from solar and lunar holy days into a system focused on the stars, which may perhaps be an older way to relate to both the fairies and our spirituality.

Stars and fairies are a bit of an odd mix. I'm sure most of us, if not all, will agree on that, but only a schoolar such as Morgan would find enough material to prove there's a connection between both and develop a practice to include the Pleiades and Fair Folk. Intriguing to say the least!

I didn't know there would be so so many connections and reasons to include them in your practice, and Morgan gives a really good introduction on the subject of the Pleiades for those unfamiliar with them. Astrology and everything concerning the sky is kind of a heavy subject for me, so I may need to re read some parts, but I got almost all of it in the first reading!

Being a new system, with four new holidays to include in your celebrations, you won't get much of a practical information besides the basic framework and some personal associations and experiences, which, and I agree with Morgan on this, makes this a work in progress with many surprises in the future. After the Daimler-athon I had, the first two chapers, that summarize some basic information about fairies, were a bit slow for me, but after the book is out you'll definitely need to refres some aspectes.

I really liked how innovative, creative and solid this book is. With Pagan Portals - Living Fairy: Fairy Witchcraft and Star Worship, You get the 101 to get started, take Fairy Witchcraft to the next level, and also discover new Liminal Gods; particularly fond on that trickster God, and I'm eager to connect with him. Morgan did it again. Another great book to your shelves!

Book review: Saviors - Duty and Sacrifice 1

Hi there! I hope you are all safe and sound, pornies. I come with a new book revew that you will enjoy a lot if you like complex characters, drama and a light dose of fantasy and adventure. I finished reading Saviors: Duty and Sacrifice 1, by Devon Vesper, and liked it a lot. Thanks to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a copy of this book and next ones!

  • Saga: The God Jar's Saga #1
  • Print Length: 270 pages
  • Publisher: Magelight Press (September 19, 2017)
  • Publishing Date: September 19, 2017
  • Genres: Fantasy, Fantasy Romance, M/M Gay Romance
  • Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars
Trust is more terrifying than any weapon. Valis’ father wants to sacrifice him to the evil God, Qos. His uncle wants to use him as a magical battery and sex slave. All Valis wants is to live in peace, without fear of constant abuse. When he escapes his father’s sacrificial knife and runs away, he lands in the camp of his two saviors, Kerac and Darolen, holy Aesriphos warriors powerful enough to put his family in their place. But trusting anyone could be fatal, and the warriors ask the impossible: to sell his father’s farmstead and abandon his old life to join their monastery. They’re his only hope and when he learns to trust them, they’re the father figures he always wanted, but Valis isn’t sure he’s strong enough to put aside his fear and start over.

I felt this novel shorter than it is due to the style. You can read it quite quickly and enjoy the details, the scenes, the descriptions, and have the whole experience. The characters are too human and it's easy to like them as well (the main characters, of course; Valis' family, except for his mother, is a nice piece of bullsh*t, thak you very much,) but they allhave their flaws. No one's perfect here, which is great!

Valis made a real change through the book, from a broken, insecure boy to a more confident one, he is in the path to heal hiself from years of verbal and physical abuse. He has some serious issues, and although he worked with them in this book, there's still too much to be done in that regard. I think I know what is about to happen, but I'll leave the door open for surprises.

There were scenes a bit too slow for me, where descriptions and details took to much space, and there's a certain scene near the end of the book that seemed a bit hasty, but that would have been better in the next books. I was a sad to have that possibility erased, along with the low dose of fantasy I got, to be honest. Those are my only issues with this novel, although I still liked it.

Devon has a nice style, she enjoyes what she does and makes the reader feel that all the time. Saviors: Duty and Sacrifice 1 is a good starting point for the saga, gives you nice elements to build your expectations, and ends in one of those lovely-hateful cliffhangers. It was a good reading that will leave you wanting for more. The good news are that I already have the next books, hehe, so here it goes for a read-athon!

About Devon Vesper:
Born on a Navy base in Patuxent River, Maryland, Devon has traveled the world, living in Sigonella, Sicily for three years, and visiting many European countries before moving back to the states around the age of seven. She’s lived in Florida for sixteen years, Oklahoma for a year, and Pennsylvania for the rest. She graduated from surgical technology school near the top of her class in 2004, and uses her medical and worldly knowledge to enrich her books whenever possible. Since she has bipolar disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, general anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and has trouble leaving her house due to all that, Devon works full time as an author and editor, and spends as much time as she can talking to other authors and her readers.

Interview: K.L. Hiers

Hi there you guys! Hope you are okay. ^^ It's release day! Acsquidentally In Love comes out today, and I'm so happy you will get to know Sloane and Azaethoth. You will totally love them, hopefully as much as I did, hehe. I had the chance to have an interview with the author, K.L. Hiers, about this novel, her inspiration and future projects. There are good news here! ^^ Remember to visit her website as well.

1. What gave you the idea to write this novel?
It all started as a smutty birthday present for a very dear friend. She wanted me to do something dirty with tentacles, and I was instantly intrigued. Even though I had never written anything like that before, I decided just to go for it. I had so much fun, and I was really surprised how much I had liked it. Like wow, this is amazing and really hot. I knew then that I was hooked and wanted to write more.

2. How would you describe the writing process?
Most of it was trying to figure out a way to justify writing tentacle smut with a solid story! I knew that I needed some kind of special universe in which there would be creatures with tentacles who could then get it on with mankind. Aliens and mutations are both really popular choices in tentacle literature, but I wanted to do something magical. I’ve always been a fan of fantasy and fascinated by H.P. Lovecraft’s Old Ones, so I went about creating my own tentacle god religion. Once I started working on the details of the lore, the actual story for the book came along pretty quickly.

3. Would you say there's a part of you in the characters?
Oh, definitely. I’m sure a lot of writers do this, but I love putting little bits of myself into all the characters I write. It helps me connect with them and hopefully makes them feel more authentic to the reader.

4. Sages and their religion are an important part of Acsquidentally In Love. Although I have an idea already, are they based on some religion?
If you’re thinking witchcraft, you are absolutely right!
When I was first trying to put together my new tentacle religion, I obviously looked to H.P. Lovecraft for inspiration. Although he wrote about worship of the Old Ones like Cthulhu, there was almost nothing about how that worship was actually conducted. There were no rituals, no holidays, and not even a clear structure for the faith. That wasn’t going to work for me at all because I wanted the gods and their worship to be a big part of the story.
My tentacle gods live up in the stars, so I needed a religion with strong ties to the movements of celestial bodies. Many ancient holidays were based on lunar cycles and events like solstices or equinoxes, so it made sense to me that Sages would celebrate their faith focused around these. While I was researching religions, Paganism jumped right out at me because there’s so much focus on being attuned with the planet, and it fit well with the kind of “natural” faith that I wanted to create.
Obviously, there are differences in the meaning behind the holidays, and actual witches do not worship a massive pantheon of tentacle deities. I created my own unique rituals for the Sages to practice and specific traditions for big events like the birth of a child, funeral rites, and so on. I’ve written page after page about the Sages and all the gods, and although I may not even use but a fraction of it, I’m very happy that I created a religion with such depth. I put so much time into it, and I hope that readers will enjoy learning about it.
5. Why did you decide to make a trickster God one of the protagonists and not another one?
I honestly thought a well behaved god would be boring. I wanted this story to be really fun, and I loved the idea of my mortal hero having to constantly curb all the god’s wild antics. There’s a lot of potential in writing two characters in conflict, both for sexual tension and some laughs, and it was a freakin’ blast letting my trickster god get into all kinds of mischief.

6. Death and grief are an important part of Sloane's life, and I really felt his pain. How did you build him as a character and made sure he would be real?
Without going into too much detail, the part of myself that I put into Sloane was definitely grief. Writing has always been therapy for me and working out some of those pesky emotions through a character like him is a wonderful outlet.

7. Do you think God/ the Gods/the Universe listen to prayers or are we on our own?
The ultimate question for all of mankind, right? No pressure! Ha! Oh, my goodness. Well, I’m an absolute heathen, but I do want to believe that there is a higher power somewhere out there. I’m very wishy washy on the details, but I want there to be a meaning to all of this. I don’t think we are entirely on our own, but I do believe we need to help ourselves instead of waiting around for some sort of divine intervention.
8. What do you expect your readers to feel when reading this novel? I definitely felt aroused more than once!
Aroused was definitely one of the goals, hehehe! It’s such a weird and exciting story, and I really wanted to create something unique that people hadn’t read before. I hope that they gasp at all the surprises, laugh at all my silly jokes, cheer for these characters when the going gets tough, and that they will have as much fun reading it as I did writing it.

9. What are you working on right now? Any project, perhaps book 2, in the making?
Yes! I am very happy to say that Book 2 is done, and I’m just finishing up editing before getting ready to turn it in to my publishers! Rough drafts for books 3 and 4 for this series are also done, and I’m planning to have nine books in total. We will see Sloane and Loch again, but we’re also going to meet lots of new characters and see other parts of this magical universe.
For my BDSM fans, I’m also finishing up a new title about a lonely undertaker and a very bossy florist, so be on the lookout for that as well!

10. Which would be your advice for future writers?
Never give up and don’t be afraid to kill your darlings.
Getting published can be a long and very frustrating process, but just keep at it. Make sure you find a solid proofreader or editor who will help you make tough decisions when trying to prepare your manuscript for submission. Accept that you may have to make some sacrifices like deleting scenes or rewriting them and keep on pushing. Also, research your potential publishers. Be sure to find one that already publishes books similar to the ones you’re writing. If you’re ever unsure about something, there are countless author groups on social media that you can reach out to for help as well!

Kinky regards, K!

Book review: Tarot Healer

Hi there pornies! Happy Monday! I finished a great book this weekend and couldn't wait to share it with you. It's a work. Tarot Healer: Using the Cards to Deepen Your Chakra Healing Work, by Leeza Robertson. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

  • Print Length: 276 pages
  • Publisher: Llewellyn Publications (August 8, 2020)
  • Publication Date: August 8, 2020
  • Genres: Healing, Tarot, Divination, Therapy, Meditation
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars
Tarot Insights for Healing Your Energetic Body. Learn how to combine energy healing techniques with the spiritual power of tarot for a whole new approach to restoring your well-being. Tarot Healer guides you through each of the seven chakras, showing you how to clear blocks and enhance your personal energy. With dozens of hands-on exercises, meditations, tarot spreads, and guided readings, author Leeza Robertson helps you interpret the cards as a road map for emotional and physical healing. This book explores how thoughts, feelings, and actions impact your ability to achieve spiritual renewal and release old wounds. Working with tarot as a guide to aligning and balancing the chakras, you will begin to expand and embody love, security, intuition, and divine energy as you become a true tarot healer.

I've been reading tarot cards for a while, and I think it's impossible not to have some meanings more present than others when you make a spread. However, this book challenges exactly that part of your brain to give you a different side of the cards and remind you about other meanings, other relationships between them and how to look at them as if you're starting from scratch. In a way, you are!

With a chapter for each chakra, divided in eight sections to explore its most important aspects, you gain a bigger understanding of what they take care of, the connections between them and, what's better, how to tap into that energy. The author teahces you several readings and methods to discover the current state of your chakras with tarot cards and uses them, at the end of the chapter, to heal it from whatever problem it may have.

Some of the descriptions seemed longer than they needed to be for me, and some segments were a bit repetitive, so the reading was a bit slow now and then. However, you get a complete insight in what Leeza Robertson means all the time with a simple and informal language. I liked that it seemed to be a conversation most of the time.

Tarot Healer: Using the Cards to Deepen Your Chakra Healing Work quickly became the book I took most notes from, and I would recommend it for any kind of energy healer, besides tarot readers, of course, who want to know more about chakras and the cards. This is not just another book, but a reading that will take you to next level!

About Leeza Robertson:
Leeza Robertson (Las Vegas, NV) is the author of Tarot Court Cards for Beginners and Tarot Reversals for Beginners, and she’s the creator of two tarot decks, the Mermaid Tarot and Animal Totem Tarot. When she doesn't have her nose inside a book or her fingers dancing across a deck of cards, she runs her online class called the Moonbeamers, which focuses on tarot and the moon's cycles.

Book review: Huntsman

Hello there! How is that weekend going on? Another great reading done, and you totally need to read this beauty! Today I want to tell you about Huntsmanby Morgan Brice. Thanks to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a review copy!

  • Saga: Fox Hollow Zodiac #1
  • Print Length: 188 pages
  • Publisher: Darkwind Press (July 20, 2020)
  • Publication Date: July 20, 2020
  • ISBN-10: 1647950066
  • ISBN-13: 978-1647950064
  • Genres: Romance, Drama, Fantasy, ShapeShifters, Homoerotic
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars
A grieving wolf. A hunted fox. Fated mates, thrown together by chance, and the looming threat of a fabled Huntsman who might tear them apart forever. Fox shifter Liam Reynard is running from a killer. He uproots his life to find sanctuary in Fox Hollow, deep in the Adirondack Forest in New York. When his car breaks down, sexy wolf shifter Russ Lowe comes to the rescue, and one touch makes it clear they’re fated mates. Neither man was looking for love, and both are still mending from past heartbreak. When mysterious fires and disappearances threaten Fox Hollow, Liam fears the killer is hot on his trail. Can he protect the town and his fated mate from the evil hunting him, or will an ex-lover’s betrayal cost Liam everything he loves?Huntsman is full of sexy shifters, hurt/comfort, second chance love, sincere psychics, hot first responders, found family, and fated mates. Intended for readers 18 years of age or older.

Let me get this straight: I'm already in love wih shape shifters. Althoguh I've only recently started reviewing the genre, I read this and that, and found that it quickly lends itself to repetitive elements. However, not the case for this one! You will get many surprises with Liam and Russ break the mold for sure, and more than once!

I really, really liked how the author created this world and innovated, using animals you don't often get. We've all seen wolves, foxes, bears... but there are some nice additions I cant wait to see in the future. The idea of a shifter-haven kind of place is amazing, I like that, but it's still different here: mediums, witches, and I would say there seems to be more on the way!

This book had a lot of romance and sex and cuteness, maybe not to much of world-building, but being the first one I don't care that much. You get a clear idea of what to expect, and Morgan Brice knows exacly how to deliver. The dynamics between these two was just... arousing!

Huntsman gives a solid start to a promising series with nice elements, likeable and believable characters, and seems to be a universe with lots of pottential. I'm not that much into shared stories, since there wil be some cross-over with other books from the author, but I'm still eager to see where this leads. One things's for sure: I want to go back to Fos Hollow!

About Morgan Brice:
Morgan Brice writes Urban Fantasy M/M Paranormal Romance with lots of magic, spooky stuff, and sexy men.

Book review: Travelling the Fairy Path

Hi, pornies! How are you today? I may be a little excited because I really wanted to speak about this book, which I feel in love with since the first chapter, and is the third book in the Fairy Witchcraft series of one of my favorite authors. Today I’m talking about Travelling the Fairy Path, by Morgan Daimler. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy!

  • Series: Fairy Witchcraft #3
  • Print Length: 288 pages
  • Publisher: Moon Books (September 28, 2018)
  • Publication Date: September 28, 2018
  • ISBN-10: 1785357527
  • ISBN-13: 978-1785357527
  • Genres: Fairies, Celtic mythology, Witchcraft, Magic
  • Rating: 5 / 5 stars
An in-depth and experiential look from the inside at practicing Fairy Witchcraft. This unique form of spirituality is one that melds the traditions of the Fairy Faith with neopagan witchcraft, creating something that is new yet rooted in the old. In this third book in the series the reader is invited to travel down the path to Fairy with the author and see how their journey has unfolded over the last twenty-five years, weaving together practical experience and academic study. Looking at this form of witchcraft with an eye that is both serious and humorous Travelling the Fairy Path offers insight and suggestions for practices shaped from the source material and lived in daily life to help as the reader moves from beginner to experienced practitioner.

Whereas the second book was more aimed at a religious practice and how to build your craft focusing on the Fey, this book takes you one step further into what it would be a daily, “mundane” practice, so you can incorporate Fairy Witchcraft in your life with ease. There are many marvels here, if you ask me! It was one surprise after the other!

I liked all of the book, there was not a chapter I didn’t enjoy or a page that didn’t make me think about what I believed or felt about a certain topic, and it is way much easier to picture myself following these advices and practices than those on the second book. I don’t mean that it isn’t useful, but that the material here is aimed at a more practical approach.

You get to learn about names, etiquette, offering, trance, dreams, the importance of ballads and go deeper into concepts such as beauty, glamour and their role in witchcraft. I have been one of those witch who don’t see the power in beauty, but I’m quickly changing that idea, and this Morgan Daimler certainly played a role in it after what I read!

In the middle of so much mythology, folklore and traditions, Travelling the Fairy Path is a practical book that will guide you and teach you on how to incorporate the Fair Folk to your life in a natural way. You will get much more familiar with them and get a clear idea of what it would be like to live as a Fairy Witch. Plus, you will learn a lot about the Ogham! I’ve been waiting for a trust-worthy source and finally found it!

Book review: Acsquidentally In Love

Rise and shine, pornies! I hope you are having a good week. There's a book about to be published and that I totally devoured in one sitting! You're gonna love this one if you're into gay tentacle sex. I'm speaking about Acsquidentally In Love, by K.L. Hiers. Thanks to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a review copy!

  • Saga: Sucker For Love Mysteries Book 1
  • Print Length: 200 pages
  • Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (August 25, 2020)
  • Expected publication: August 25, 2020
  • ISBN-10: 1644053721
  • ISBN-13: 978-1644053720
  • Genres: Romance, Drama, Fantasy, Tentacles, Homoerotic
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars
Nothing brings two men—or one man and an ancient god—together like revenge. Private investigator Sloane sacrificed his career in law enforcement in pursuit of his parents’ murderer. Like them, he is a follower of long-forgotten gods, practicing their magic and offering them his prayers… not that he’s ever gotten a response. Until now. Azaethoth the Lesser might be the patron of thieves and tricksters, but he takes care of his followers. He’s come to earth to avenge the killing of one of his favorites, and maybe charm the pants off the cute detective Fate has placed in his path. If he has his way, they’ll do much more than bring a killer to justice. In fact, he’s sure he’s found the man he’ll spend his immortal life with. Sloane’s resolve is crumbling under Azaethoth’s surprising sweetness, and the tentacles he sometimes glimpses escaping the god’s mortal form set his imagination alight. But their investigation gets stranger and deadlier with every turn. To survive, they’ll need a little faith… and a lot of mystical firepower.

I so did not read tentacle porn. I so did not read tentacle porn. I dreamed with it! Although I don't usually read this kind of stories, the idea of a God falling in love with a mortal was too appealing and I really wanted to know how that would work out in the end. I expected drama, tears, fights, but this was way too funny!

Despite having some tension now and then, Sloane and Azaethoth kept making me laugh, smile and blushing. We always imagine the Gods and serious dudes, but this one here is just a clown and knows how to make you smile like an idiot! This was like the perfect romance comedy with a good dose of magic and mythology.

The romance was a bit rushed to me. It seemed they feel in love, and really deep love in a matter of days, which made the final scenes lose a bit of impact. I would have liked it to take a bit longer so the impression was bigge, but I still enjoyed how K.L. Hiers developed their relationship and made it look more natural.

I saved the best part for the end: tentacles. So much tentacle sex! I was about to faint with these scenes! You can expect a big, and I mean a big dose of sexual content here, a bit weird if you're new to the genre, but you will be quick to enjoy it. Trust me on that. *wink wink* Acsquidentally In Love takes the best of monster fiction and turns it into a hot fantasy novel! I can't wait for the next book in this saga!

About K.L. Hiers

Book review: Fated

Hi there. How are you today, pornies? Tday I want to talk about a fantasy book that is very different to many you may have read until now. It is a novel that explores important topics and builds a fantasy world at the same time. Fated, by Devon Vesper, is book 0.5 in The God Jars Saga, which I’ll keep reviewing in the next weeks. Thanks to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a copy of this book and next ones!

  • Saga: The God Jar's Saga #0
  • Print Length: 72 pages
  • Publisher: Magelight Press (February 11, 2019)
  • Publishing Date: February 11, 2019
  • Genres: Fantasy, Fantasy Romance, M/M Gay Romance
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars
Sometimes dreams come true regardless of what you choose. Kerac keeps having recurring dreams of a blond boy calling him “Papa.” Yet, he’s on the path to becoming an Aesriphos—a holy warrior priest—and Aesriphos aren’t allowed to have children due to the dangerous nature of their jobs. And Kerac’s severe social anxiety proves too debilitating for him to pursue his passion for the Aesriphos Order’s cause. Because of these issues, Kerac is ready to shirk his training for the Order and become a regular priest. At least they can have a family. It’s the only way to see his dreams come true… until he meets a fellow Aesriphos Aspirant named Darolen. Darolen’s quiet strength and uncanny ability to calm Kerac down from his panic attacks proves to be just what Kerac needs to help him grow within the Aesriphos Order. This focused attention and Darolen’s unwavering support make Kerac fall hard for the craggy warrior-mage. But the dreams of having a son still plague Kerac. He must choose between the man who makes his heart race, and the son his god keeps promising him. Available free in Devon’s Newsletter.

While being a short story, this book includes mental health and panic attacks as important elements of the plot, which not many (if any) fantasy novels use. It was a high plus and a brave decision to make! I really felt understood when reading because, although I haven’t had panic attacks like Kerac, I’ve been in similar situations and they are represented very well in the story.

I liked how Devon Vesper described these situations, how Kerac was presented and how he eventually evolved. Although Darolen certainly played an important part in it, Kerac was in control and decided what to do about his own health. Being so much misinformation about mental health and that many people think we depend on others, and some of us even thinking so, it was amazing to have a book which explained this correctly.

The romance between Kerac and Darolen was a bit rushed for me, but their chemistry was undeniable, how they become a healthy relationship despite the kind of dependency Kerac had at the beginning. They helped each other, became equals and with sexy results in the end, because you also get some good kink before this one ends.

Fated was a good introduction to the world of the Aesriphos, an inclusive novella that paints a realistic picture of mental health in a fantasy world, the right amount of world-building (the reason for a gay-lesbian group of warriors? Amazing!) and that helps you get a good idea of what is about to happen. It is focused on Kerac, his relationship with Darolen and how his mind works, as you may expect, so there’s not too much magic, adventure or fighting, but you never lose interest.
