There are topics you think you know, but you actually don't. Greek mythology was one of those for me, something I thought I had a basic, solid understanding of, but after reading this book I realized how much I was missing. I'm talking about Modern Witchcraft with the Greek Gods: History, Insights & Magickal Practice, by Jason Mankey and Astrea Taylor. Thanks to Jason for sending me a review copy!

A Witch's 21-Century Guide to Making Magick with the Greek GodsThe ancient Greek gods surround us even now in our modern world. From Aphrodite to Zeus, this book reveals the origins of more than sixty deities and other mythological figures, including the Olympians, Titans, and Primordial Forces. Explore how they've been worshipped across the centuries and how you can work with them in your own practice. You'll meet the gods one by one, exploring their history, unique correspondences, and personal insights from contributing authors who work with them magickally. This book also provides rituals and spells to connect with each deity. Draw down the moon with Selene, cast a courage spell with Ares, and reclaim lost parts of yourself with a ritual for Persephone. By inviting these divine beings into your practice, you can cultivate a magickal life that satisfies your soul to its very core.
With a complete explanation of the most famous figures in the Ancient Greece, both authors offer an incredible amount of information regarding historical, social, religious, and cultural aspects of each deity they explored. It's a book that combines theory with practice, offering each reader the chance to have a first approach to the god or goddess that calls them the most, but also giving them enough room to develop their own practices.
I particularly enjoyed the historical evolution behind each of the deities. Both Jason and Astrea explained how each of these divinities developed, evolved, and adapted depending on social cultural, and political needs. They share different versions along with, when possible, specifying which one was the earliest or original.
There were personal insights on these gods, some written by guests authors, that offered offered additional details and stories that showed them under a different light. I would say those were my favorite part of the book, a few of them being particularly interesting enough to make me grow curious about deities I never paid much attention to, such as Eris and Iris. I can say I understand them much better now than before.
With a simple style, a complete approach, and a lot of useful information that serves to start a wholesome practice, Modern Witchcraft with the Greek Gods is useful for witches interested in focusing their work on this pantheon or those who want a fascinating theory. Whichever may be your case, this is a must have!
