Book Review: Secretly Mine

Hello pornies. ^^ Is your week gong okay? I just finished reading another novel, and you shouldn't be surprised to know I loved it just as with all the other books from this author. I couldn't put it down once I started it, giving a great starting point to a possibly great series. I'm speaking about Secretly Mine, by Collette Davison. Thanks to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a review copy!

  • Saga: Offbeat Shifters #1
  • Print Length: 360 pages.
  • Publisher: Selfpublished (February 9, 2021)
  • Publication Date: February 9, 2021.
  • Genres: Contemporary, Drama, Erotica, Omegaverse, Romance.
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars.
I’m being paid to spend a month on tour with Jesse Steele, to keep him safe and protect his image. Simple.
The first rule of being a bodyguard, is never get involved with your client. It should have been easy to follow, but Jesse Steele is a beautiful, kind omega, who’s far more down to earth than a pop star has any right to be.
Someone discovering our tryst becomes the least of our worries when it becomes clear Jesse has a stalker.
Can I love Jesse and protect him, or will my emotions cloud my judgement and put him in danger?
Secretly Mine is the first book in Offbeat Shifters, an m/m paranormal romance series with a continuing storyline. This book includes a protective tiger shifter, a sweet monkey shifter, lots of cuddles, secret kisses, piggy back rides, and a HFN ending. Whilst it is set in an alternate universe where omegas give birth, there are no pregnancy or birth scenes in this book.
Trigger warning for mentions of infertility.

I liked this novel a lot because it played a bit with the classical elements of the omegaverse structure. Although you can find the dominant alpha and the emotional omega, there are a few twists here and there, some cute scenes thanks to Jesse being a monkey shifter, and there's a bit of power play between these two guys that sets the stage for a promising second book. The best part was that there was a great balance between the romance and the relationship between Jesse and his dad, how complicated it was and how it evolved as the story progressed. That's something I haven't seen that often, and I'm glad this novel gave it enough space.

As always, Colette Davison has a great style, develops an interesting plot in no time, catches the reader's attention and doesn't leave u waiting too much for the action to get started. The climax scene was everything I expected it to be. The author plays with your thoughts and tries to lead you in one direction, only to prove you were wrong all along. That was a nice plot twist!

What I didn't like that much was that there was some of instalove between Jesse and Isaac. I felt it was a bit fast the way they feel in love with each other, which doesn't mean I didn't find it cute as fuck, but I expected things to go slower because of their context. The ending was also a bit strange for me, but coming from the instalove background I guess it was to be expected.

If you like cute omegaverse stories that have a high dose of reality and speak about complicated family relationships, hidden loves, and a thrilling development that takes your breath away, you're gonna love Secretly Mine. I'm curious about what will happen in the next book since the main problem was already solved in this first installment in the Offbeat Shifters, but there are still some issues that need their space. This will be an interesting ride, and I'm eager to know more about Jesse and Isaac.

About Colette Davison:
Colette’s personal love story began at university, where she met her future husband. An evening of flirting, in the shadow of Lancaster castle, eventually led to a fairytale wedding. She’s enjoying her own ‘happy ever after’ in the north of England with her husband, two beautiful children and her writing. Website.

  • Print Length: 92 pages.
  • Publisher: Self-published (January 31, 2021)

LUSTING FOR MY LOVER, TEMPTED BY ANOTHER
Always a very good student, Ty finds himself floundering in college. He misses Garrett horribly, and being a shy introvert is keeping him isolated.
While spending countless hours fantasizing about previous sexual exploits with Garrett helps to control Ty's raging hormones, it's not helping his mood nor his grades.
Ty's emotional pain is so intense he fails to notice a lasciviously gorgeous classmate named Tanner. With two closely guarded secrets and one big problem, Tanner's instant desire for Ty's stunning good looks is another problem. How does he figure out if Ty is gay?
Can Tanner get Ty to talk? Will he figure out if Ty is gay without breaching his own secrets? Is he going to be a shoulder for Ty's pain? Will this hawt duo share an emotional friendship or maybe even get into each other's pants?
I can't wait to find out. What about you? Click to find out!
*This book contains explicit scenes of a gay sexual nature by consenting characters who are over 19 years of age. It is intended only for readers who are 18+ years of age. If you are underage or may be offended by this topic, do not purchase this book.

First things first: The review. This book takes us to a new, bitter chapter in Ty's life as he learns what it's like to be without his boyfriend. I like how the author played with him, giving the character enough space to develop, be something else than a horny boy (not that I mind, mind you,) and show a human, vulnerable side of him. There's a good balance between kink and feelings, with a bit of preference towards the later, so maybe we can wait more about the first one in the next books?

Carnal Anguish doesn't have much sex, mostly based in our guy's feelings, what it is like for him to be in a brand-new environment, a place he doesn't know about, and his fears regarding Garrett. I really liked this part of it because it showed that Ty Debauchee can write an interesting story without adding much sex; however, the scenes we get are steamy enough if you ask me.

Although it's a bit obvious what will happen after Carnal Anguish, I'm eager to see how it will happen. Ty Debauchee has a good hand to create interesting stories with a rather small cast of characters, and this worked particularly well in this book. Also, with so many intense feelings and putting his main guy in such a problematic position, you can only wait for a wild ride. The good news is that the second and third book in the series are out as a double feature!

Now, for the news! I was the editor for this book! I'm so excited and I oh-so wanted to share the news with you guys! I've edited books in the past, mostly for my friends, and it has been a long while since I did this because I decided to take a rest from it to focus on my own things. However, as a reviewer, I always noticed bits of this and that, details and aspects of the books I was reading that could improve. I've been in contact with Ty since I started reviewing Desire, and was gladly to say yes when we started talking about me editing the first book in this new series. I wanted to be able to help more than just by reviewing because I've enjoyed his work a lot (no sh*t, Sherlock). You could say I'm a bit biased because of this, but I'm speaking only as a reader. As an editor, I'm glad I was able to help Ty Debauchee with this book. ^^

About Ty Debauchee:
As an energetic man at 6’4” tall and 195 pounds, I very much enjoy athletic pursuits including basketball, waterskiing, and snow skiing. While having a quiet and shy personality, I value my integrity above all else with loyalty to my friends and family coming in as a very close second.
Growing up with the stress of gay urges in a straight world and struggling to find my place in the world, I frequently used my dreams and fantasies as an emotional crutch to get me through some very challenging times. By sharing these stories in my books, I sincerely hope to ease the stress of others who might be facing the similar challenges and offer an entertaining escape for anyone in need. Website.

Book Review: A Bit More Of Me

Hi there! ^^ How are you today, pornies? ^^ I come today with a review for a novella I fell in love with after I read the first pages. It's a very short story, although it feel longer due to the topics it touches and the scenes it includes. Also, the impression it leaves is bigger. ^^ I'm talkign about A Bit More Of Me, by Kent Lowethe sequel to his debut, A Bit Of Meone of my favorite fiction readings of 2020. Thanks to the author for sending me a review copy! (And so sorry for the late review; mea culpa).

  • Print Length: 94 pages
  • Publisher: Selfpublished (December 14, 2020)
  • Publication Date: December 14, 2020
  • Genres: Drama, Romance, Contemporary
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars
It’s Christmas. It’s snowing. It’s not for everybody.
With Jack struggling to move on from his lonely childhood, George makes it his mission to get his boyfriend to see the magic of Christmas. But just as he thinks he’s winning him over, a shocking turn of events blinds Jack to the good in humanity. Will Christmas be the most wonderful time of year after all?
DUE TO THE ADULT NATURE OF THE CONTENTS READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

Although it is a very short book, there is some character development that helps the entire cast evolve a bit more (pardon not the pun) after the end of the novel. You get to see George and Jack in a better place, get to know them better, see how they've changed and how they keep on changing. There are several scenes that let us peek for a while in these boys' heads, understand what's going on inside of them and why they feel the way they feel.

Kent managed to give everyone their time on the highlight, especially Nan and the Wasp, hehe (man, I was waiting for it!). I had to control myself not to laugh at my phone and look like an idiot in the middle of the street! The author has a hand that can create tender, sexy, and comic scenes with ease, not to mention his descriptions always take you to any place he wants to.

I guess I would only have liked this story to be a bit longer, but part of its charm is that it's not a saga or a series. This novella was the perfect extra, a nice surprise for the author's readers, and who knows? Maybe we could get a hotter, sexier, steamier extra on Halloween? (Ahem, mister Lowe, if you're reading this, please, do it!) Because, seriously, this novella gave a serious case of blue balls! You don't do that to your readers! You simply don't!

Seduction, and comedy dance before your eyes during the whole reading. Kent Lowe wrote such a cute story in A Bit More Of Me that you will remember the first time you feel in love, the perfect sequel to A Bit Of Me that also proves what a great author Kent is! I can't wait to see what comes next, although I do expect it to have a bit more of sex, becuase... You simply don't! That put aside, go grab a copy! ^^

About Kent Lowe:
"My English teacher in Year 11 once said that I'd either be a rent boy or a writer. I wasn't successful at the first so thought I'd try the latter."
Kent Lowe grew up in East London, spending most of his youth in Dagenham, before moving to Essex.
Being a daydreamer and somewhat of a loner, he found art and literature to be the perfect medium for his endless imagination. After finishing college, Kent went on to study a Fine Art degree where he moved from canvas to installation which reared his love for both visual and literary storytelling.
Kent has always had an affinity with animals, and growing up with a menagerie of creatures, he now has fish, an orange cat and four adorable dogs that make his chaotic world just that little more harmonic.
As an artist and writer, all of Kent's works delve into humour, love and friendship.

I said it before and I say it again: this is good porn! The series shows how Ty and Garret get to know and explore each other, how they fall in love more and more with each book, and the adversities they face. Each novella is a long fantasy that explores many of the problems gay guys face as they grow up, although I won't deny this is an idealized and steamy version.

There have been some ups and downs in the series, truth be told, and the firt ones have a bit of a strange writing style, but this improves as the series advances. The fetishes, the high voltage, and the kinks almost killed me by constant boners and dehydration, not to mention the levels of romance and drama in the entire series.

In case you want a detailed description of all of the books, feel free to check my individual reviews:
I have enjoyed all the books and can't wait for the next one to cum come! Also, you save $3 if you buy the set. ^^ Also, I'll see you tomorrow to share great news! ^^

Midnight Thoughts: Does virginity matter?

Hi, pornies. I hope you are feeling great today. ^^ I don't come with a book yet, but soon I'll share a porn review! However, for now, there's a topic I want to discuss and know what you think about: Virginity. Does it matter? How is it defined? What does it mean to be a virgin? Nowadays there are those who care about it and those who don't, so who's right? Well, here's what I think about it.
I think we can all agree that the initial definition of virginity, the one we knew first, is the lack of sexual experience, mostly regarding penetrative sex. That would be the most traditional and known as far I'm concerned, but it is the best one? I'm not that sure.

Virginity is directly related to a state of purity, innocence, like the innocence of a child. However, if we keep sex in mind, I wouldn't say that sexual virginity is lost whe you have penetrative sex for the first time. Your first time is your first time, and it has nothing to do with penetration.

Karen Bouris spoke about something interesting in her book (although wih very bad reviews on Amazon) The First Time: What Parents and Teenage Girls Should Know About "Losing Your Virginity": if we keep the traditional idea of virginity in mind, then technically speaking almost all lesbians are virgins, which then would lead to the debate of what is "lesbian virginity". And don't get me started on masturbation, sexual toys, and if they count as sex, becuase then none of us readign is would be a virgin (if you haven never touched yourself, well, you're a rarity; not a bad thing, mind you, just... peculiar in the modern world).

I don't think a level of purity that lets you touch a unicorn would be so easily taken away, not in a physical way, at least. If being an innocent is the same as being a virgin but in the sexual way, then it would mean you're a virgin until you discover who you are as a sexual being. On Virginity Lost: An Intimate Portrait of First Sexual ExperiencesLaura M. Carpenter explains something about this:
If you're a gay male, you're supposed to have anal sex because that's what gay men do. And if you're a gay woman, then you're supposed to have oral sex, because that's what gay women do. And so those become, like markers, for when virginity is lost.

I think we can agree on that, because the first time you have the kind of sex you want to have, in case you want to, to begin with, is when you form an identity as a sexual being. Watching porn and playing with your body would be a previous exploration, but sex would be the final test, and when you have a clear, definite answer, you left that innocence behind.

In her book Virgin: The Untouched History, Hanne Blank explains that "virginity reflects no known biological imperative and grants no demonstrable evolutionary advantage." I agree with her, although I can't deny that the first time one does something leaves a big impression on the mind. The first times I explored what I like and dislike did that to me, and they have lead me in a path to know who I am sexually speaking. I can only imagine what I'm going to discover when I have penetrative sex.

However, this doesn't mean that you evolve or become a better version of yourself when you loose your virginity, which is ironic for us men in the Western world. I've been mocked and ridiculed by family and friend for staying virgin at my 25, and I'm not the only case.

In almost all countries, the majority of men 20–24 report having had sexual intercourse before their 20th birthday; in a few countries, substantial proportions of men in their early 20s were still sexually inexperienced by age 20.

It is particularly important to increase primary and secondary prevention efforts that target men in their early 20s, who are more likely than younger males to engage in risky sexual behaviors and to have adverse reproductive health outcomes.

The 20s seems to be the age for men to have sex, so technically speaking I'm still on time to social standards. However, similarly to what a friend told me these days when we talked about this, who is sociaty to determine who we are in our intimacy? You don't loose it when you have sex for the first time, but when you give that innocence, that private part of yourself, to someone else during sex.

If you are a pure, innocent being, then it is only you can allow someone else to take that away from you. You can have as much sex as you want, but it will be only sex if that's what you want it to be. You're exploring yourself, having fun, whatever you want to call it (and please make it always consensual and responsible), but the moment you give yourself, when you are making love and connecting with someone else, that's when you're not as innocent. Why? Becuase you're allowing yourself to be vulnerable in a new level.

What do you think about this? Personally, I'm not letting go my physical or metaphorical virginity still, but I feel more comfortable knowing what it means for me and where I stand regarding this topic. I used to think that I wanted to stay virgin until marriage, but now I know it's not much about marriage but about having the right person with me (I could speak about the right people, but since I'm still not sure about being polyamorous or not, I can't say so and it's not my place to say what virignity is for poly people).

Kinky regards, K!

Midnight Thoughts: The problem of rape in porn and fiction

Hi pornies! I hope you are all okay. Today I wanted to talk about something that should be clear but that still generates a bit of debate in certain circles: "positive" rape in porn videos and fiction; by fiction I mean books, comics, manga, and any other kind of content.
Let's begin with Merriam-Webster's definition of rape, just be sure we are all in the same page, shall we?
Unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against a person's will or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent because of mental illness, mental deficiency, intoxication, unconsciousness, or deception

There seems to be a trend in some studios and publishers that sell the idea that "it's not rape/doesn't count if you like/liked it". Er, wrong. You can like it in the moment, and then feel bad about it, and I'm not only speaking about sex here, but everything done knowing it's not right. As humans, we all have our weaknesses, our flaws and mistakes, but that doesn't mean we are guilt-free.

The problem with this kind of content, to be specific, is that it normalizes things that should not happen. I have consumed some genres and content that only now I realize were wrong. I'm working on such issues because they romanticize sex in offensive manners and that simply are not right.

I used to think that everyone had the right to enjoy whatever kind of content they would find attractive or interesting. I consume horror novels, for eff's sake, and that doesn't turn me into a serial killer. However, the difference lies in that horror plays with fears, nightmares, taboos, criticizing sociaty and the world in general. The problem begins when the things that cause harm are presented as "good".

This happened with a book I started but had to abandon because it glorified rape and abuse more than only in . Despite the author wrote an introduction specifying that wasn't her intention, one only needs to read the first chapters to notice she's normalizing rape. Unsurprisingly, the novel was banned from Amazon and Smashwords; although she republished it on the second, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before it's kicked out again (let's hope definitely).

What worries the more is that it has a 3.82 of 5 stars in GoodReads, with 21 people rating it with 5 stars. Whatever is wrong with these people? I was horrified to read again and again about a young guy being raped, abused, tortured, thrown into a toxic, abusive, and controlling relationship with a another man who kept using him as a mere piece of meat, and these people found it "hot" and "awesome"? Something's definitely wrong here.

The same happens in porn. Whenever I see something that could hint an abusive relationship, I search for something else. With so much content one click away, why would I consume something that perpetuates one of the most harmful and traumatizing acts someone could experience. I used to think that it's just a matter or educaton and knowing the difference between right and wrong, but after the shock of reading that book I am rethinking many things.

Is there any point in including rape? Absolutely, as long as it is in a responsible manner. The Miller test
seems to be a good standard, not perfect, and by all means not one that should be applied to digital material, but it's a start, I guess. I've read books where the characters overcome abusive relationships and find a cute, fulfilling, sexy one, and books that include shocking scenes the protagonist has to process and heal from.

Life is not always pretty, nice, and cute. It gets hard, horrible, it includes traumas, abuse, harm, and much more. The point here is in showing the public where we stand regarding those topics. I can read a book with detailed descriptions of murder and rape, but will only keep doing it if I'm told those things are wrong, not because I need to, but because I deserve some respect as a consumer, because I don't want to normalize harmful actions through fiction.

I've read about those topics, I know where I stand regarding them, and although I still have some work to do, it's a start. I understand what rape is and why it is wrong to include it as a good thing, and yours truly is not going to be part of that game.

Book review: The Couple Next Door

Rise and shine, pornies! I hope you hada wonderful weekend. I just finished reading a great book by one of my favorite authors. The beginning was a bit strange for me, but the more I read, the more I loved it! Today I'm talking about The Couple Next Door, by Rick R. Reed. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

  • Print Length: 200 pages.
  • Publisher: NineStar Press (September 14, 2020)
  • Publication Date: September 14, 2020.
  • Genres: Contemporary, Drama, Gay, Horror, Romance.
  • Rating: 4,5 / 5
Jeremy Booth leads a simple life, scraping by in the gay neighborhood of Seattle, never letting his lack of material things get him down. But the one thing he really wants—someone to love—seems elusive. Until the couple next door moves in and Jeremy sees the man of his dreams, Shane McCallister, pushed down the stairs by a brute named Cole.
Jeremy would never go after another man’s boyfriend, so he reaches out to Shane in friendship while suppressing his feelings of attraction. But the feeling of something being off only begins with Cole being a hard-fisted bully—it ends with him seeming to be different people at different times. Some days, Cole is the mild-mannered John and then, one night in a bar, he’s the sassy and vivacious drag queen Vera.
So how can Jeremy rescue the man of his dreams from a situation that seems to get crazier and more dangerous by the day? By getting close to the couple next door, Jeremy not only puts a potential love in jeopardy, but eventually his very life.

As I said, the first pages didn't work out for me that much and it took me a while to get past them, but once I did, the story was great, I fell in love with Jeremy, with Shane, and a bit with John, to be honest. The characters are not that complex as in other books from the author, but they have some attractive backstories that will amaze you.

Rick R. Reed knows how to create an intriguing plot nad play with your senses. My heart was racing during the last chapters, and while I tend to say I fight my need to sleep so I can finish a book, sleeping was the farthest thing in my mind as I devoured chapter after chapter. The style, the descriptions, the dialogues, and the whole atmosphere made me an addict to this book!

What did it miss so it could be perfect? Shane and John's relationship was too much at some points. I couldn't twink someone as Jeremy would buy all of it in the real world, no matter of caring and helpful they would be. I won't say the lack of sex didn't play a role also, but it's a minor detail. This is a drama book, and that's where the problem is for me: sometimes, there was too much of it to be realistic.

However, this is a novel you can't put down once you get started with it. The Couple Next Door is a book that gets under your skin once you give it the chance, and Rick R. Reed has more than once surprise under his sleeve for the readers. With a fast pace and a heartfelt romance that defies all odds, this book goes right into one of my favorite once already.
