Today I want to tell you about a book you might like: She/He/They/Me:For the Sisters, Misters, and Binary Resisters, by Robyn Ryle. Why? Because it is an academic work about genre and sexuality in a choose-your-own-adventure format.

She/He/They/Me analyses primarily the subject of gender, exploring different alternatives and ideas in regard of both topics. Do you imagine a society with no gender, for example? Or one with multiple genders? Maybe you want to know about what it means not to be a white man or woman in the U.S? Or perhaps you’re curious about how intersexuality happens before a baby is born? This books tries to give an answer to those doubts and more, and depending on which question or option you chose, you will pave your path toward the end.

Robyn Ryle did a surprising amount of research to include as many options as possible in She/He/They/Me, even some that we may not consider possible. I admire her work and passion on this, even more because she used a straight-forward language to keep this a simple reading. However, given the long list of cultures and views on the matter, she had to focus mostly on the U.S. and give brief glances at other countries.

What actually bothered me was the feminist tone in several chapters, as if she tried to redeem the feminine readers of the book. I know that there a long history of women about their gender roles and their perception as a weaker sex, but to have the masculine-focused chapters significantly shorter than the others created an unbalance.

That put aside, I actually enjoyed She/He/They/Me and would like to read something else by the author. I may not have agreed with some perceptions and points of view, but Robyn Ryle did a good job in general lines. Should you be interested in exploring a different life as a queer person, make sure to grab a copy!
