Book review: Fearless Tarot

Good mornign, pornies! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! I just finished reading Fearless Tarot: How to Give a Positive Reading in Any Situation, by Elliot Adam, a book that made me re discover this tool that has been helping me for several years now. Although I don't see tarot cards as something evil, negative or dangerous, this book makes you think again about several meanings. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy!

  • Print Length: 336 pages.
  • Publisher: Llewellyn Publications (October 8, 2020).
  • Publication Date: October 8, 2020.
  • Genres: Divination, Magic, Paganism, Tarot, Witchcraft.
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars.
Transcend your fear of negative cards with this beginner-friendly guide to the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot. Using his engaging and easy-going style, Elliot Adam teaches you how to move through the shadows and into the light no matter what card you pull.
We’ve all been there: hoping for the best as we draw a card…but oh no, it’s the Devil! This book shows you that fear won’t prevail—every card can become something positive. Elliot helps you find the courage to tackle any reading by explaining both upright and reversed meanings in a constructive way. His approach features unique spreads and interpretations, and he encourages you to use your inner wisdom to start an uplifting dialogue with your deck. Fearless Tarot provides everything you need to read tarot without fear.

This is book follows the format of a basic reading on tarot cards and their meanings, the focus in how to make the readings positive and healing oriented. You don't get a history or personal narritive about this deck, but new meanings and different sides to the ones you already knew, along with a few new readings spreads, along with suggestions and advice on the matter.

There were cards that surprised me, such as the infamuous 4 and 10 swords, along with the Devil, The Tower and 8 of Cups, among others. Adam makes a great work at finding a silver lining to each of the cards. While some of the meanings seemed a bit of stange due to my own opinions of their messages, but there's enough room to accomadte both in.

I did have a bit of a hard time with the long descriptions. Some of them felt longer than they should have been, at least for me, which made some of the segments loose their impact. I've always found it strange that the reversed meanings of th card are shorter than those for the upright card, and this book is one of those cass. While there is a bit of perosnal information here and there, most of the time to get to know meanings and their examples.

I would say Elliot Adam did a great job with Fearless Tarot: How to Give a Positive Reading in Any Situation, even more being his debut as a published author. It is innovative, interesting, atractive and easy to follow. It doesn't matter if you know about it or not, as I said at the beginning, but how open you are to learn something new.

Book review: Naughty & Nice

Rise and shine, pornies. ^^ I hope you are having a wonderful weekend! I just finished reading another novel that you need to get. Naughty & Nice, by DJ Jamison, lives up to its title, making it an interesting journey to get to know both Jonas and Quinn. While it is related to Secret Admirer, also by Jamison, you don't need to read it to fully enjoy this novel, although I would advice you to do it before so you get the few references in it. Thanks to Neon Rainbow Review  for sending me a review copy!

  • Print Length: 224 pages
  • Publisher: SelfPublished (November 19, 2020)
  • Publication Date: November 19, 2020
  • Genres: Contemporary, Drama, Gay, Romance
  • Rating: 4 / 5 stars
Why can't I forget your kiss...
Dear Quinn, Why must I have these feelings for you? You're my ex-stepbrother, and nothing will change that truth, no matter how many letters I write.
I never expected to see you again--or to rescue you from the side of the road in a blizzard. I didn't think you would ever like me, much less kiss me in a steaming hot tub on a snowy night. It seems we make better lovers than brothers, which is all kinds of naughty and nice while we're snowed in together.
But can this new intimacy last when the skies clear and my family finally arrives for the holidays, or are we just two guys in a mountain cabin with a great view of everything we want but can't have?
Hopelessly yours,
Jonas

I so didn't expect this book to come to life! Jonas was a minor character on Secret Admirer, so when I knew about this novel it was a big surprise, and of course I signed in! DJ has a good hand, funny ideas, and while this was a nice, cute romance, it had a good dose of kink after the first half of it.

You already know I'm a lover of descriptions, that they immerse or take me out of the reading depending on how good they are, if they add anyhting at all. This book was a pleasure to the eyes and mind. I got so into it that I only paused when I totally needed to, and my phone fell on my face several times as I fought back my need to sleep.

The first half wasn't that good, though. There were a few parts when the ex-stepbrother drama was a bit repetitive for me, and while I know it must be conflictive, it was hard to sympathize with those feelings. While I enjoyed the book since the first page, it became a bit strange to read "he is my ex-steptbrother" and similar phrases.

If you're into winter-holiday-Christmas romances with a bit of drama and good naughty scenes with explicit talk, you're gonna enjoy Naughty & Nice for sure. DJ Jamison crafted a great surprise for her readers with this book, and I'm sure many of you will enjoy this sweet yet kinky love story. The fact that includes topics such as masculine mental health and body shame gives it a big plus, by the way!

About DJ Jamison:
DJ Jamison writes sweet but spicy M/M romance that most readers consider relatively low-angst. She grew up in a working-class family, and many of those influences can be found in her books: family drama, workplace conflict, and of course, love! DJ lives in Kansas with her husband, two sons, a timid snake, and a sadistic cat named Birdie.

Author Interview: K.L. Hiers on The Last One to Let you Down

Hi pornies! I hope you've been fine. This has been a busy week, but the good news is that I had a new interview with K.L. Hiers, the author of The Last One to Let You Down, (read my review for about it yet? No? How dare you?! Do so) and Acsquidentally In Love (also review and interview!) about this new novel. Want to know what being an embalmer is like? Keep reading. Thank to Gay Book Promotions for coordinating this interview and the review copies for both books!

1. What gave you the idea for this book?
I wanted to do something different. The romance genre is full of firemen, lawyers, CEO’s, cops, and all the normal ‘sexy’ professions, but I couldn’t find anything about working in the funeral industry. I thought it was a great chance to tell a story that hasn’t been told before. The ol’ saying goes “write what you know”, and there’s nothing that I know more about than the funeral business.

2. What do you expect readers to experience with this novel?
Curiosity, some angst, maybe even a bit of disgust, ha! I do hope they enjoy learning about what happens behind the closed doors of a funeral home and that they understand why this can be such a difficult job. I know this isn’t going to be a book that everyone will enjoy, but that’s okay. If this isn’t their cup of tea, there are literally thousands of other books they can choose that aren’t about embalmers. Keeping all of those details, including the embalming scenes, was important to me because that’s part of what makes this story so unique.
I knew that I would get some polarizing opinions over it, but I felt it would have been a disservice to the profession not to explain to people what we do on a daily basis. This isn’t a job that a lot of people have a reference point for because it’s not something we see represented in the media very often. When we do, it’s often unkind, seedy, or simply flat-out inaccurate. As much as I wanted to tell Tom’s story of falling in love with Cypress, it was just as important to tell his story as an embalmer for the reader to fully understand him.

3. Was it easy to write about your profession as an embalmer?
Yes and no. I get asked all the time about what I do for a living and what’s involved, so I have some basic cookie cutter responses to use without being too graphic. I’ve explained the full embalming process so many times that I could probably do it in my sleep. In my experience, however, it’s the nasty stuff that I specifically try to avoid that people really wanna hear about. It’s led me to the troubling conclusion that most people assume this job is difficult because it’s ‘gross', not because of the potential trauma that comes with it. It doesn’t matter that you stayed up all night crying after picking up a murder victim from the medical examiner’s office or that you can’t stop thinking about seeing someone young enough to have been your own child succumb to cancer - everybody just wants to know how many times you’ve dealt with maggots because somehow that’s the worst thing they can imagine you doing.
That’s what I wanted to explore in this book, the emotional weight of the job, and it was hard. It became personal super fast, but I wanted readers to see what the job is really like. People in this business have high rates of alcohol and drug abuse, career burnout is common in just a few years, and our turnover can be staggering. This is a job that is both physically and emotionally demanding, and the average person is clueless. It’s been hidden behind this pretty curtain of perfect suits and fancy hearses, and I wanted my readers to see beyond that. It made me feel pretty vulnerable to share these insights, but I hope it helps humanize the funeral business and show readers there’s so much more going on that they probably never even thought about.

4. How much reality did you include in the novel regarding the funerary industry?
I’m going to say ninety-nine percent. Although I did flub some tiny details here and there, giving the reader an authentic experience was very important to me. Honestly, the most unbelievable thing is Tom only working as an embalmer and not having to wait on families, ha! In smaller funeral homes like the one I created for the novel, funeral directors are usually responsible for both meeting with the families and embalming. It’s not uncommon for the same person to pick up the decedent, take them back to the funeral home, embalm them that night, and then wait on the family the next day. Especially with the way cremations rates are climbing, there’s usually not enough work to justify an employee who exclusively embalms.
The position that Tom has is usually only feasible for certain situations like a large funeral home that has multiple locations, someone who works at a university preparing cadavers for medical students (which, it’s worth noting, is not quite the same process as embalming a body to be viewed), or a trade embalmer who is paid per case and typically contracts with several different funeral homes to handle all their preps. I chose to give Tom this specific position because it’s what I know the best, and it was easier to write the story with him focusing on one job.

5. The novel is based a lot on the topics of self-esteem, workaholism, and how much we know someone. Which would you say is the most important between those three?
I would personally say self-esteem. Part of why Tom works so much is because he doesn’t think he deserves to be treated any better, and I’m sure a lot of people feel that same way. We don’t see our own value which leads to working more and more as if we have to constantly prove our worth.

6. I'm surprised with the level of detail you included with the BDSM scenes. How did you get all those ideas?
I absolutely love BDSM, and the inspiration comes from my own sexual escapades, chatting with friends who are in the scene, and watching sooo many hours of adult video. I love writing things that I personally enjoy, kinks that I think are fun and sexy, and I try to take all of that and come up with scenes that feel authentic and passionate. I do my best to stay away from the “one two three” sort of sex pattern where it’s always the same stuff going on over and over again and strive to keep my smut diverse and exciting.
There were actually a few firsts for me in this book - like that docking scene! Had never written it before, and I had so much fun doing something new!

7. I think I get a reference, hehe, but what does the cover mean?
I loved the implied message of being tied up by your job. Like, literally, the model’s hands are tied up with a tie. For a representation of Tom, this was perfect because his job is what’s kept him from enjoying his life. The addition of the flower came from a joint effort between me and my cover artist (Covers By Jo!) after looking at a mood board I’d made for the book featuring the work of photographer Fabio Da Motta. He is a fantastic artist who creates these vivid images of models in shibari bondage with flowers and other organic elements. I highly recommend looking him up on IG - his work is simply breathtaking.

8. Think fast: Kiss, Marry, Kill. Who?
Kiss Tom, Marry Cypress, Kill Gerald!

9. What are you working on right now?
Both #2 and #3 in my Sucker For Love Mystery series have been accepted for publication, and I’m finishing up the rough draft for #4 while waiting for edits. I’m getting ready to start a new series with the incomparable Jennifer Griffin about modern gods who like to hang around a BDSM club. I’m also trying to outline the next Cold Hard Cash book which may end up as the jumping off point for another dark mafia romance series. And last but certainly not least, I’m trying to finish the edits on Wishes for Rohi, an Omegaverse style fantasy about a genie and a human that will hopefully be out before the end of the year.
So, yeah, staying busy and just writing, writing, writing!

Kinky regards, K!

Book review: The Last One to Let You Down

Hi there, pornies. ^^ I hop you are fine. I spent thse days taking some needed time off, and I'm back with another book you totally need to read! The Last One to Let You Down, by K.L. Hiers, is way too different from what I've read so far, and in the perfect way! Thanks to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a review copy!

  • Print Length: 390 pages
  • Publisher: SelfPublished (November 13, 2020)
  • Publication Date: November 13, 2020
  • Genres: BDSM, Contemporary, Drama, Gay, Romance
  • Rating: 5 / 5
Thomas Hill is a lonely embalmer who's in some big trouble - his ex-boyfriend has been forcing him to illegally sell dangerous chemicals with no signs of stopping, and Tom doesn't know what to do. His situation gets even more complicated when Cypress Holmes, a smoking hot local florist, walks in on Tom making a deal. Cypress agrees to keep quiet, but his silence comes at a price.
He wants Tom to do exactly as he says and to give him complete and total control over his body at all times. Tom now has no choice but to obey Cypress's every command to stay out of jail. But when Cypress starts spanking him and tying him up, he realizes he doesn't mind the rough treatment at all.  With or without the threat of blackmail hanging over his head, he likes what Cypress does to him... and he doesn't want it to stop.
Author's Note: This book includes intense sexual scenes, rough spankings, and depictions of death and embalming as they relate to the funeral industry. If this material offends or may upset you, please don't buy this book.

After I read Acsquidentally In Love, a smutty novel that drove me crazy, and for which I also had an interview with the author, there wasn't a chance I was going to pass on this novel! The sole idea of sex and death being combined was way much temptation, and knowing Kat's style I had high expectations about this book. Guess who was right?

Thom and Cypress were the perfect match from their first scene together, and I mean scene in two way! You'll get it when you read it. This novel had a high dose of drama and tension that kept building up as the novel progressed, but you don't realize it because, one, the characters and the romance develop pretty nicely, and two, the sex is way too great!

You think you've read BDSM? Think twice, btch. This book has some surprises in store for you, each better than the last one. The style is highly explicit and so are the dialogues. It shows that Kat had a lot of fun with this book! And the ending. Sweet heaven, that plot twist at the end! It is not only the scene itself, which was amazing, but the message it carries: You never know a person, not completely.

While their romance started being a bit toxic and it worried me a lot how things would go from there, Thom and Cypress made The Last One to Let You Down a great novel. If you like all things about death, you're curious about the funerary industru, and want so high-voltage BDSM gay sex, this book will be love at first page. K.L. Hiers is on her way to become one of my favorite authors!

About K.L. Hiers
K.L. "Kat" Hiers is an embalmer, restorative artist, and queer writer. Licensed in both funeral directing and funeral service, she's been working in the death industry for nearly a decade. Her first love was always telling stories, and she has been writing for over twenty years, penning her very first book at just eight years old. Publishers generally do not accept manuscripts in Hello Kitty notebooks, however, but she never gave up. Following the success of her first novel, Cold Hard Cash, she now enjoys writing professionally, focusing on spinning tales of sultry passion, exotic worlds, and emotional journeys. She loves attending horror movie conventions and indulging in cosplay of her favorite characters. She lives in Zebulon, NC, with her husband and their six children, three of whom have paws and one who sometimes thinks he does. Website.

Book review: Mentor - Purity and Control 2

Hi there, pornies. I hope you are doing okay. These have been crazy days! I'm still reading, although I'm a bit away from internet (no sh*t sherlock)Today I come with the book review for Mentor: Purity and Control 2, by Devon Vesper. While I'm still waiting for things to speed up, this is getting better and I'm starting to wonder what will happen. ^^ Thanks to Gay Book Promotions for sending me a copy of this book and next ones!

  • Saga: The God Jar's Saga #5
  • Print Length: 326 pages
  • Publisher: SelfPublished (March 6, 2018)
  • Publication Date: March 6, 2018
  • Genres: Fantasy Romance, M/M Gay Romance
  • Rating: 3,5 / 5
Valis must step up as a mentor, but two highly suspicious men may ruin everything.
Something is wrong with Vohan and Xetar—two reliquary guards who have just returned from field duty. They are adamant that Valis is a spy for Qos because of the black magic he wields. Valis insists their malevolence is more than war trauma, but no one—not even his closest friends—believe him.
With the time to retrieve the lost God Jar quickly approaching, Valis must teach the reliquary guard force the necessary skills to succeed in the coming battles. However, a riot amongst the men hides Vohan and Xetar’s treachery and Valis has to act fast.
If he doesn’t, the people he loves most will pay the ultimate price.

So far, this saga has been really slow, this one in particular was a bit more than the previous ones, but it became faster in no time. There is not much action, some fighting scenes, but it focused more on drama and creating a tense atmosphere in the whole novel. Valis is put into several hard situations to which he needs to show if he's really the man many expect.

There's definitely more erotic content, although it's still too little for my taste. I can see a good thing coming, but knowing the author for the teaser she is, I know she will make me wait a bit more. ^^' This is getting better, I like how the characters are evolving and that some are getting more attention than before.

On the bad side? The troupe of the chosen one. There has no been a lot of development about this so far, although many ideas and scenes are related to it. We get a lot of religious thoughts, but no explanation on why certain things are happening. I like to know why, and so far I haven't gotten none of that, which is... not so good when you've read more than half of the saga. This needs to get better soon.

The good news is that things are changing faster than I toughts. Something dark and dangerous is coming to Valis and his group, and I'm eager to see whatever that is. I'm sure I'm gonna like it because Devon Vesper knows how to surprise me. Mentor: Purity and Control 2 was a good reading and a good installment, but the saga needs to improve soon and give some content for the whole Chosen One thing.

About Devon Vesper:
Born on a Navy base in Patuxent River, Maryland, Devon has traveled the world, living in Sigonella, Sicily for three years, and visiting many European countries before moving back to the states around the age of seven. She’s lived in Florida for sixteen years, Oklahoma for a year, and Pennsylvania for the rest. She graduated from surgical technology school near the top of her class in 2004, and uses her medical and worldly knowledge to enrich her books whenever possible. Since she has bipolar disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, general anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and has trouble leaving her house due to all that, Devon works full time as an author and editor, and spends as much time as she can talking to other authors and her readers. Website.

When Cameron's failing relationship finally comes to an end, he finds himself on the streets of Sydney, homeless and alone. All he has left is a suitcase full of his clothes, and his job as a security guard. Battling severe depression and anxiety, Cameron fears he has hit rock bottom.
A chance meeting with a young homeless man soon changes everything, though. Abused as a child, the mysterious Mr Loner has a dark secret that threatens to unravel his very existence. Will Cameron get his happily ever after, or will Mr Loner’s past destroy them both?
A confronting MM romance set in Western Sydney, Australia.
The second instalment of The Marsden Park Series.
"How do you define two lost souls, who are completely alone in the world, except for each other?"

Does the synopsis sound interesting? You have no idea of what awaits wihin these pages, let me tell you! This story is powerful, moving, sexy and cute, but also had me about to collapse more than once. The topics included make it heavy and darker than you may expect. I admit I had my doubts about it before and thought it would just a romanticized story of loss and trauma, but it's healthy and cute AF.

Reading was painful, and I couldn't stop more than a bit just to catch my breath and keep going. I couldn't handle the need to know what would happen, how everything would end, while the characters made me fall in love with them. There is every single type of people you may expect, not only the good ones but also the jerks and the ones you wish you never get to know.

The author has a great style that puts a spell on you from page one. The descriptions, the emotions, the feelings, the insight you get into Cameron's head, his problems, his very soul and core makes it impossible not to love him! I just wish the ending had been a bit different, because while I loved that plot twist (you will never see that coming, never!) it was left a bit on the air. Just a few loose ends that I didn't catch that much.. That aside, you need to read this, people!

Reading Beneath the Grandstand, by Amy-Alex Campbell, was a big experience. It is filled with drama, cuteness, a bit of kink, but lots of humanity and understanding. You will see homeless people differently after you are done with this book, becuase it's a merciless attack to every single thing you think you know about them. It may be a bit idealized, if you ask me, but with an undenyable power.

The second instalment of The Marsden Park Series.
"How do you define two lost souls, who are completely alone in the world, except for each other?"

Excerpt

The stench of BO and stale sweat hung in the air, thicker than the throng of people packed into the vestibule of the train. As the doors opened at Redfern station, the passengers took a collective gasp and squeezed in tighter together, as more people forced their way into the overcrowded space. Someone elbowed Cameron in his back, and shoved him nose-first into another man’s armpit; on his other side, he could feel someone’s dick grinding into his hip. Cameron grimaced and managed to turn his face away from the armpit. The day these people spend $3.95 on some deodorant, I’ll have a bloody stroke, he thought irritably.
With a jerk, the train started rolling slowly towards Central Station. Peak hour on any Sydney train was a nightmare, especially on one of the older trains that were overheated and stunk like dirty leather. Cameron berated himself for taking the 7am shift; it was Friday and supposed to be his day off. His last shift had finished at midnight, and with over an hour travel each way, he had been lucky to get three hours sleep.
The train pulled in at the station with a screech and another jerk. Cameron patted his arm to ensure his security license was still firmly in its pouch on his arm, then braced himself. As soon as the doors opened, he was swept with the crowd of commuters onto the platform, and into the tunnel towards the concourse.
Once he reached the concourse, the crowd thinned, and he was able to walk at his own pace again. There was a slight chill in the air; winter was just a few weeks away, and soon that chill would turn into an icy frost. Cameron shivered and walked faster towards the main exit.
He knew better than to even try to catch the light rail that early in the morning. He tapped his Opal card at the barriers, and cut through the park next to the station. It would be much faster to walk the distance, than try to squeeze onto another overheated sweatbox.
The park was full of brightly coloured tents, the only shelter that the homeless people had. Cameron felt bad for them; he himself was a bee’s dick away from being homeless, and the thought of living on the streets terrified him. With a lurch, he pushed the thoughts from his mind, and picked up his pace.
